We Are A Second Chance
Did you know that approximately one in three American adults—about 70 million people—has a criminal record? This statistic highlights a significant challenge faced by many in our society. With over 44,000 documented restrictions affecting those individuals, it can be incredibly difficult for them to reintegrate and rebuild their lives. Each year, more than 600,000 people are released from prison or jail, and it’s important to recognize the obstacles they encounter as they seek a fresh start.

Many prisoners discover a renewed sense of hope and purpose through Jesus Christ, and countless inspiring stories of transformation happen daily. Their stories are real, thanks to the support from the CA Jail Outreach and the dedication of volunteers and donors.

However, when these men and women return home after serving their sentences, they often encounter what is known as the "second prison." This concept highlights the lasting effects of a criminal conviction, regardless of how much time has passed. It profoundly impacts how others perceive them, affecting their ability to find jobs, secure housing, feel welcomed in their communities, obtain professional licenses, or access financial aid for education. These barriers can make it incredibly challenging for individuals with a criminal record to regain their footing, support their families, and contribute positively to society.

Our mission does not stop here; it goes beyond the jail system. We are committed to helping them for life, especially supporting their families and children who are also affected. It’s important to remember that they had no part in the jail system; they were mere bystanders.

Family/Children Program
How many children in the U.S. have an incarcerated parent?

In the U.S., about 1.5 million children (1 in 49) currently have a parent in prison. In 2015, over 5 million children (7 percent) had experienced parental incarceration at some point. These numbers may be underreported due to the stigma surrounding incarceration.

What feelings do children experience with an incarcerated parent?

Children aged 2 to 6 may feel separation anxiety and traumatic stress. Those aged 7 to 10 might experience developmental regressions and low self-esteem. Preteens (11 to 14) may display trauma-reactive behaviors, while teens (15 to 18) might face a premature termination of dependency, potentially leading to intergenerational crime.

What obstacles hinder visitation?

Financial strain makes it difficult for families to visit loved ones in prison. Unexpected transfers of inmates can make visits even harder. Many prisons require visitors to speak through thick glass using telephones, and the visiting process usually involves security searches. Crowded waiting areas and long wait times can discourage families from visiting. Also, many families do not have the money or the equipment needed for video visits.

Veteran's Program

Our nation's veterans demonstrate remarkable resilience, yet many encounter challenges upon their return to civilian life. Some grapple with mental health issues, trauma, or substance abuse. It's disheartening that over 10,000 veterans are in federal prisons and jails.
Even amidst the criminal justice system, veterans may still be eligible for their VA benefits. It is crucial for incarcerated veterans and their families to reach out for assistance in accessing state and federal resources.
Your tax-deductible donation will provide crucial support to veterans and their families affected by substance use and mental health disorders. It will also aid in developing programs to enhance the justice system and offer vital services such as onsite training and referral programs. Discover the inspiring journey captured in our memoir. Your contributions will have a tangible impact by meeting basic needs such as electricity, water, food, shoes, clothes, and transportation for those in need. Together, we can truly make a positive difference in the lives of veterans and their families. Click the 'Orange Donate Button' to offer a small financial gift.
